Printing price raise in USA

Last Updated on Thursday, 6 May 2010 11:38 Written by admin Thursday, 6 May 2010 11:38

The effects of the February 2010 Chilean earthquake on pulp production have forced price increases on paper products worldwide. As a result, we have had to adjust the pricing of our printed products. Effective this Saturday, May 1, 2010, there will be a temporary increase in the prices of all our printed products. The percentage of the increase will be respective to the specific type of stock; certain stock will be raised by one percentage, while other stock will be raised by another percentage. Please note that these increases are tentative; a more permanent price structure may take 30 to 60 days to put into effect. Please bear with us as we make these adjustments; we are doing our best to keep these price increases to a minimum and our overall prices the lowest in the industry.

Paper Price Increase

The paper we use in our printing process is made from pulp produced by mills in Chile. The magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the Chilean coast on February 27, 2010, caused severe damage to the production facilities of the country’s two largest pulp companies. These facilities produced nearly 8% of the entire world’s pulp in 2009; they must now undergo repairs and have been forced to temporarily cease production of pulp. In addition, the earthquake and resulting tsunami destroyed much of the country’s transportation infrastructure, severely affecting the entire supply chain. Without this pulp, the amount of paper that can be produced will be much smaller than in the past.

Prior to the earthquake, the prices of pulp were already on an upswing, with a scheduled price increase that was supposed to come in March 2010. Now, with the added effects of the lack of production causing pulp supplies to be down, the price for paper mills to obtain pulp has risen. This has caused a chain reaction, increasing prices for paper and paper products worldwide.

As a result of these unfortunate events, it is likely that there will be an increase in the prices of printed products throughout the industry over the next months. As soon as we are made aware of these price increases, we will keep you informed.
